Artist Statement
Within this particular body of work, I explore the gesture of sewing by focusing on the elements of drawing and design. I am interested in making visual marks that arise from real-life experiences and folk tales through visual storytelling. Hence, I inquire about domestic themes of longing and isolation through the use of textile tasks such as embroidery, quilting, and appliqué. Along with this inquiry, I aim to connect the textile practices of native cultures with contemporary stories and experiences. Thus, I borrow gestures from traditional textile practices from The Americas to merge them with printing, collage, and drawing in order to create poetic images rich in visual elements.
